Premier Jean Charest said Friday that the first call for 450MW will be open to all wind energy developers while the second of 250MW is designed to include First Nations communities.
The government will introduce two draft laws in the fall outlining the details of the planned purchases, he said.
The announcement, which the industry has been waiting for, is part of the government’s plan to have 4GW of wind energy on Quebec’s electricity grid by 2015.
It is also designed to ensure the wind energy manufacturing sector that has built up around the province’s wind power purchases is maintained.
Like previous wind power calls, there will be local content requirements imposed on the projects At least 60% of projects costs will have to be spent in Quebec, half of that in the Gaspé and Matane regions where most of the province’s manufacturing base is located. "The jobs are here to stay, " said Charest.
