Areva delivers 20 5MW turbines to Borkum West 2

GERMANY: The first 20 Areva 5MW M5000 wind turbines have been delivered to the Borkum West 2 offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.

The Areva Multibrid M5000 5MW has recently been revamped to include a 135-metre rotor
Areva is contracted to supply 40 M5000 5MW turbines — a total of 200MW — to complete the first phase of the project. The deal also includes commissioning and maintenance services.

Borkum West 2 is being developed by Trianel, a consortium of around 80 European municipal utilities. It expects the 200MW first phase of Borkum West 2 — located 45 kilometres from Borkum Island — to be operational by 2012/13.

Areva claims that by the end of 2014, at least 120 of its M5000 wind turbines will be installed at various offshore wind farms in German waters.

The company is also bidding — as part of two partnerships — for 3GW of French offshore projects across five sites at Dieppe-Le Tréport, Fécamp, Courseulles-sur-Mer, Saint Brieuc and Saint Nazaire.

Late last year, Areva launched a new version of the M5000 featuring a 135-metre rotor, an expansion of 19-metres on the previous version. Areva also said the turbine's nacelle had been revamped to be lighter and easier to access.

Areva claims the M5000-135 increases the swept area by 35% on the M5000-116, improving its performance in low-wind sites.
