Moventas wins M5000 gearbox supply deal

FINLAND: Moventas has been handed an €80 million deal to supply gearboxes for Areva's M5000 5MW offshore turbine.

The gearbox, which Moventas said had been tested over the previous year, is designed for medium wind speeds. Moventas did not reveal how many units would be supplied under the deal.

Areva's M5000 is currently running at the Alpha Ventus wind farm in the German North Sea and is currently being installed on the 100MW Borkum West II project.

The M5000 will also be installed at the 500MW Saint-Brieuc project off the northern coast of France, which was won by an Iberdrola-led consortium.

Moventas was unable to comment on whether it would be opening a manufacturing plant in France.

In December, Moventas was acquired by venture capitalist Clyde Blowers. Speaking to “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç at the time, investment director Gavin McCallum said he was looking to expand the business beyond its European stronghold.

He added: "The business has got strong research-and-development facilities and product pipeline and is well positioned to play a part in the multi-megawatt development of turbines."
