The machine, a variation of Alstom’s 3MW turbine and part of the same manufacturing platform, is designed for sites with low wind speeds where longer blades are needed to capture more power more effectively.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Alfonso Faubel, Alstom’s senior vice president claimed the turbine would "reduce balance of plant costs by 10-15%".
Faubel says Alstom is already holding confidential negotiations with key global customers for the ECO122. Apart from European markets, he expects initial sales in North America and Brazil, where the company is building new production capacity, though "the machine is on offer around the globe."
The first prototypes and pre-series will go up in 2012, with mass commercial deliveries expected for 2013.
