Cantabria’s regional government allocated the 205MW to Biocantaber, a 50-50 joint venture Iberdrola shares with local engineering firm Ocyener. The allocation forms part of a 1.4GW regional wind tendering process, finalised end at the end of 2010.
Iberdrola says Biocantaber will uphold its promise to link wind plant construction to regional development. Most importantly, it will provide jobs for Gamesa’s regional generator and machine parts factory in Reinosa.
In its bid, Biocantaber also promised to establish a renewables R&D laboratory and to build eight biogas plants, powered by local farming waste.
As with all new wind concessions made in Spain since May 2009, realisation of the Cantabria allocation depends on a central government national call for new wind capacity after end-2012.
Iberdrola is the single biggest shareholder in Gamesa, with a 19% stake.
