The turbine will have a hub height of 143 metres, an increase of 54 metres on the existing model. The new size means it will be bordering on limits set by the aviation authorities.
Repower said the extension would enable the turbine to be suitable for locations such as hilly areas and forests.
The 3.2M114 tower will constructed from concrete. The machine has a rotor diameter of 114 metres and is designed for low wind speed areas.
Speaking about the new design,Repower chief technology officer (CTO), Matthias Schubert, said: "Especially in the European market, greater hub heights allow new sites to be developed. In Southern Germany, for example, significant unexploited potential still exists in hilly terrain and forested areas."
In early 2009, REpower built the two 3.XM prototypes. The first was the 3.4MW 3.4M104 with 104-metre rotor for IEC IB/IIA wind sites* while the second the 3.2MW 3.2M114 with 114-metre rotor destined for IEC IIIA locations.*
