The blade is designed specifically for Alstom’s 6MW offshore wind turbine. The prototype blades are expected to be ready for installation by the winter of 2011.
Alstom is planning to install prototypes of its turbine in 2011 and 2012 before starting full production in 2014.
It has not announced the length of the blades, but has said they will be longer than the current longest blades of 62-63 metres.
The blade will use specifically developed materials to be strong and lightweight.
Alstom is developing the turbine for the UK’s Round 3 offshore programme.
Following the announcement of France’s first offshore wind tender, Alstom and EDF Energies Nouvelles said they would be bidding jointly for French projects.
These will be located at Saint-Nazaire, le Trépot, Fécamp, Courseulles-sur-Mer and Saint-Brieuc, and have a total capacity of 3GW.
