The agreement between the two companies, centres around the launch of the G11X 5MW, which Gamesa says is based on the technology of the G10X 4.5MW onshore platform.
According to reports, the development centre will be formally opened next week. It will have around 40 employees. The work at the centre will involve the first offshore testing of the turbine.
Northrop Grumman was brought on board because of its experience with handling heavy load logistics in a marine environment.
However, the turbine is set to be built in the UK. Last year, Gamesa announced plans to base the majority of its offshore operation in the country.
Last month, as part of this process, Gamesa unveiled proposals to build a marine wind technology centre in Glasgow, Scotland.
The G11X will be Gamesa’s first offshore turbine. The manufacturer has said it is likely to be superseded by the G14X 6-7MW, which is set to be launched in 2014.
