China’s newly installed wind capacity reached 16GW as of the end of 2010, taking its total installed capacity to 41.8GW.
The figure was revealed by Li Junfeng, secretary general of Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association (CREIA), at its annual New Year meeting.
Although the final installation figures for 2010 for the US have yet to be released, China believes the total figure will be around 40.2MW.
Li said China's 41.8GW of installed wind capacity, up 62% over the previous year, could replace 31.3 million metric tons coal consumption.
China’s wind power industry has increased by more than 100% for five consecutive years.
In 2009, China replaced Germany to have the world’s second largest in total wind installed capacity, with 25.8GW.
