The company aims to build a 1:6 model by the end of 2010, which will be used to help raise investment as well as technical verification.
In October, Sway received a two-year test permit for the project from the Norwegian Coastal Administration. Earlier this year the company received a pledge of support from the Norwegian Research Council for the construction of the 1:6 machine.
There are a number of floating turbines’ in development at the moment. Both Statoil and EDP are looking at building the first floating wind farms over the next year.
Sway’s model uses a pole anchored to the seabed while the tower tilts at 5 degrees. The tilting mechanism allows the tower to hold a larger turbine.
Additionally the structure uses a downwind rotor, tilted in the opposite direction and so that it is continually lined up with the wind.
Sway is also developing a 10MW floating offshore turbine. The project has received backing to the tune of €18 million from Norwegian state enterprise Enova, and is set for testing within the next 18 months.
Separately, Sway has appointed former Statkraft executive Ingelise Arntsen as its new CEO. Eystein Borgen who has until now headed Sway, will take on the role of chief technology officer (CTO).
