A joint statement by the Norwegian minister for petroleum and energy Terje Riis-Johansen and Charles Hendry the British energy minister, identified a number of areas where the two countries can work together in developing North Sea energy resources.
In terms of renewables, this includes encouraging the wind industry to exchange information on the development of offshore wind farms in the North Sea, support a feasibility study on developing an interconnection between the two countries and increase the uptake of renewables in developing countries.
Out of the two countries, the UK has been more proactive in terms of offshore wind projects and this year broke through the 1GW barrier in online capacity.
Norway has tended to focus on technological development most notably on its floating turbine projects.
The most notable of these is the 10MW Sway turbine, and the Hywind project. Statoil, which is behind the latter project, is currently looking at possible locations for a demonstration project. Sites in Scotland, Norway and Maine, United States are under consideration.
