Under the partnership the design will be developed by both companies with AMSC's Windtec subsidiary taking responsibility for the turbine's control systems. Production is expected to begin at the end of 2011.
Speaking about the move into offshore, HHI CEO Keh-Sik Min said: "While we expect our 1.65MW and 2MW wind turbines to be our onshore workhorses, the global offshore wind market holds tremendous growth potential for HHI."
A number of turbine manufacturers are developing offshore wind turbines including GE, Vestas, Clipper “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç and SWAY. The latter two of these are working on 10MW turbines in the belief a larger turbine will be more economical to maintain in a challenging offshore environment.
Out of the other two, Vestas announced last week it is designing foundations that can be used in depths of up to 70metres while GE is working on a 4MW turbine.
