The third phase of the $1 billion Biglow Canyon Wind Farm in Sherman County, Oregon, takes the installation to 217 turbines with 450MW of capacity.
It was developed by Orion Energy LLC, but will be owned and operated by PGE.
The latest phase uses 76 Siemens turbines for a capacity of 175MW.
The previous phases were:
- Phase 1, completed December 2007; 76 Vestas 1.65MW turbines totalling 125MW.
- Phase 2, completed August 2009; 65 Siemens 2.3MW turbines totalling 150MW.
Oregon’s second-biggest project is the six-phase, 399MW Klondike wind far, which sells a portion of its power to PGE.
The utility plans to derive about 9% of its retail load from renewables by the end of 2010, up from about 2% in 2008.
Oregon’s renewable portfolio standard requires the largest utilities to derive 5% of their retail electricity from eligible renewables by 2011, and 15% by 2015.
Turbine manufacturer Vestas recently announced plans to keep its North American headquarters in Portland, Oregon.
