Israeli government approves Golan Heights repowering

ISRAEL: Green Wind Energy Ltd has obtained a permit from the Ministry of Interior, the Public Utilities Authority, and Israel Electric Corpoartion (IEC) for plans to build a 14MW wind farm on the Golan Heights.

The turbines, which will  each have a capacity of 2MW, will replace the current turbines on the site. The current wind farm has a total capacity of 4.8MW.

Green Wind Energy is in talks with DeWind Ltd., a subsidiary of South Korea's Daewoo International Corporation, for construction of the wind farm.

The projected contract is worth $25million, and Green Wind Energy is considering a DeWind offer to finance the entire investment.

The new wind farm will take two months to build, with construction is scheduled for the second quarter of 2011.

Israel ended 2009 with the same 6MW of installed capacity it has had since 1992. See “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç’s report on the Israeli wind market.

The groundwork is being laid for future growth with other projects slowly moving forward in 2009. Also, the government preparing to give the go-ahead to an increase in the incentive paid for wind in early 2010.

Also on the horizon is a 380MW wind farm developer Mei Golan is planning to build with US energy giant AES through a joint venture known as Clean Wind Energy. The first phase, also located in the Golan Heights, is expected to create 200MW of installed capacity.
