Major project boosts Romanian wind energy capacity

ROMANIA: The first turbines have begun turning at the 347.5MW Fantanele wind farm being built by Czech utility CEZ in Romania.

A total of 67.5MW in capacity or 27 of the total 139 2.5MW GE turbines to be installed at the site — were connected to the grid as of July 2, the  utility said.   

Since early June, CEZ has gradually connecting the turbines to the Romanian grid. The entire wind farm should be operational later this year.

The Fantanele project represents the first phase of what is set to be a 600 MW wind complex. CEZ plans to bring online the second phase of that project, a 252.5MW facility at an adjacent site in Cogealac, next year. The Cogealac project will also use 2.5MW GE turbines.

Romania’s cumulative installed capacity amounted to only 14MW at end-2009. However, the Romanian Wind Energy Association (RWEA) forecasts that the Fantanele wind farm and other projects being constructed in the country will push cumulative capacity above 500MW this year.   

The RWEA forecasts the country’s cumulative wind capacity could amount to 5GW by 2020.
