Siemens wins North Sea grid connection deal

GERMANY: Siemens has won a €500million order from transmission system operator Transpower to connect two North Sea wind farms to the grid.

The Veja Mate and Global Tech 1 wind farms will have a combined capacity of 800MW. The two projects are located 125km northwest of the island of Borkum.

The substation is a floating self-lifting platform and will be in 40m water. It will be built in 2012 with the whole project scheduled for completion in 2013.

"The BorWin 2 turnkey offshore grid connection is a challenging project where we can apply our broad-based experience and know-how in this field," said Dr. Udo Niehage, CEO of the Siemens Power Transmission Division.
