The SCD 3MW turbine has been jointly-developed over three years by Mingyang Wind Power and German engineering specialist Aerodyn, for offshore wind farms.
By using the modular design concept, the two-bladed SCD turbine weighs about two thirds of traditional doubly-fed turbines. According to Mingyang, the turbine has its planetary two-stage gearbox and a medium slow running synchronous generator integrated in the nacelle.
The special design contributes to the reduction in the total weight and size of the wind turbine. Lower operational speed of the integrated design of the machine minimizes the wear of components.
Yaw system and certain other components are installed inside of the turbine tower, which reduces the external components. Moreover, the compact and enclosed design also improves the resistance to corrosion.
"This will consolidate our position as an international wind power development and utilization overall solutions supplier in three years," said Zhang Chuanwei, president of the board of directors of Mingyang Wind Power.
"We will complete the development of the 6MW SCD turbines by the end of this year," said Zhang.
Mingyang Wind Power is one of the five companies in the country capable of producing MW level wind turbines. At the end of 2009, its product represented 3.5 percent of Chinese wind capacity, with a total of 895.5MW installed wind turbines.
It has an annual capacity of producing 5GW wind turbines ranging from 1.5MW through 3MW.
