In October, Enel ad brought its first Bulgarian wind farm on line, a 21 MW facility in Kamen Briag. The Shabla and Kamen Briag developments were acquired in 2008 from the Bulgarian subsidiary of the Danish wind developer Global Wind Power.
Both wind farms are composed of seven, 3MW turbines from Danish turbine manufacturer Vestas.
Enel said Shabla should produce roughly 55GWh of electicity annually, satisfying the demand of about 19,000 households.
Bulgaria ended 2009 with installed wind capacity of 177 MW installed but has already doubled that figure to 354 MW in the first months of 2010. Aside from Enel's Shabla plant, the 156 MW St. Nikola wind farm of U.S. energy giant AES also came on line in March.
According to a renewable energy road map prepared recently by Bulgaria's Association of Producers of Ecological Energy (APEE), Bulgaria's wind capacity could rise to 4.8GW by 2020, including 900MW from offshore installations.
