The 12 MW project, made up of four Vestas 3 MW turbines, is to be located on the site of a former landfill and has the potential to meet more than 25% of the energy needs of the community when the winds are favourable. The cost of the full project is C$30 million, with government funding being directed to the second phase, which consists of two turbines and an estimated price tag of C$13.5 million. Although the project is split into two phases, construction of both will proceed at the same time. The project is due for completion in November.

The governments of Canada and Prince Edward Island are investing up to C$9 million in a wind power project being developed by the city of Summerside.
