Concern about costs of fire safety

Wind developers and property owners are concerned that proposed fire safety requirements for wind farms in the Altamont Pass may be too costly. The matter will be discussed in a March 15 meeting, says Alameda County planner Darryl Gray. The issue was briefly raised in a February 9 meeting. Under the proposed new rules, turbines must be provided with a yaw damper or other approved method of preventing over-twisting of pendant cables. On existing turbines, if the machine has a history of twisting problems, a cable pendant sensor must be installed no later than May 15, state planners.
