EXPANDING ABROAD, Südwind

German wind turbine manufacturer Südwind reports it has several overseas projects on its books for installation in 1996. By March, ten 300 kW machines will be delivered to Gujarat in India in co-operation with an Indian licence partner, Suzlon Energy, based at Rajkot in Gujarat. Also in the spring, five 270 kW machines are to go to a company the Ukraine, Leega of Donezk. This project is supported by the German Eldorado programme.

Other plans are not so far advanced. Delivery of 15, 270 kW turbines to Turkey is still under negotiation. This project has suffered a setback through the recent elections in Turkey which have delayed government approval. Meantime, talks over the supply of ten 30 kW turbines to Iran for stand-alone hybrid systems with diesel generators are likely to reach a swifter conclusion. An Eldorado project involving four 270 kW turbines to Belarus is also being planned.

At home in Germany, the company is marketing uprated versions of its standard 270 kW unit from the beginning of the year. These have rated capacities of 300 kW and 350 kW. Südwind anticipates sales in Germany this year of some 20 machines with rated capacities of 270 kW, 300 kW or 350 kW plus 30, of its 600 kW turbines developed from the Austrian Floda design. Series production of the 600 kW machine is expected to begin in mid 1996.

Südwind has recently applied for support under the European Union's Thermie energy demonstration programme for the development and installation of two 270 kW turbines with synchronous generators operating in stand-alone systems.

The Berlin-based company expects to increase revenue from DEM 12 million in 1995 to DEM 25-30 million in 1996, while the number of employees will rise from 34 to 55, it claims.
