Wind turbine tower manufacturer Camcal is once again open for business with the re-launch of the Arnish fabrication yard on Lewis in the Western Isles of Scotland. The troubled firm went into receivership last year. It shed the majority of its workforce in July 2006 due to lack of cash flow, with most of the remainder following in December. Camcal's assets have now been acquired by Altissimo Limited, which is backed by a number of investors headed by a Dutch/Swiss company, Business Creation Investments. New managing director Jimmy Ferguson says the yard is fully operational and is currently employing 40 people -- primarily in the short term to complete an order for Dutch turbine manufacturer EWT for 16 towers which had been put on ice while the yard looked for buyers. The Camcal name is being retained because it was known for a quality product, says Ferguson. He explains that the new owners specialise in turning around troubled companies by concentrating on core business. "We are going to focus on what the facility does best: structures that involve a lot of rolling of sheet metal, such as turbine towers, foundations and piles for offshore wind farms and any marine renewable devices that involve tubular work," he says.
