With two more contracts for its 900 kW machine, German turbine manufacturer Powerwind has now sold a total of 50 turbines in the Italian market. Powerwind says that Italian project developers Pitta Energia and Sistemi Energetici have each agreed to buy four of the 900 kW turbines, or a combined total of 7.2 MW, for a wind farm in the southern Italian region of Apulia. Delivery and installation is planned for 2009. Powerwind also plans to open a sales office in southern Italy, which will serve as a regional focused service unit for maintenance and technical support. Italy is regarded as a key market by Powerwind, which notes that demand in the country for sub-MW class turbines is particularly high, a result of both the challenging logistics of some sites and an easier authorisation process for turbines with rated capacities less than 1 MW. Powerwind was founded in 2007 as Conergy Wind and took on its current name after private equity firm Warburg Pincus acquired the unit from German renewable energy group Conergy in October.
