The order for Germany's first commercial offshore wind farm has gone to Siemens, which under a EUR 50 million contract will supply 21, 2.3 MW turbines for the Baltic 1 offshore project 16 kilometres north of the Darss/Zingst Peninsula in the Baltic Sea. Full commissioning of the turbines is due in the last quarter of 2010. Siemens replaces Nordex, which had been involved in the project since early stage development with Neubrandenburg's Brand Elektro. WPD Offshore of Bremen subsequently acquired the project rights and signed up Nordex in late 2007 to supply its 2.5 MW model. WPD later sold Baltic 1 to EnBW, one of Germany's major energy firms, which has picked experienced offshore supplier Siemens. Nordex has just one turbine operating at sea, a 2.5 MW machine a stone's throw from land. Siemens has installed more than 600 MW offshore and has offshore orders for more than 3300 MW. EnBW has signed a deal with Nordex to jointly develop wind projects on land in Europe. EnBW wants to almost double the share of renewables in its portfolio to at least 20% by 2020. "To this end, EnBW will be boosting its wind power capacity significantly," says the company's Werner Götz. The projects developed under the partnership will use Nordex 2.5 MW turbines.
