A 24.75 MW wind power project is one of four proposals selected in the final phase of SaskPower's environmentally preferred power (EPP) program. Gaia Power and Algonquin Power, both based in Ontario, will build the wind farm, the first to capture the winds in the eastern part of the Canadian Prairie province, near the community of Moosomin. Government owned SaskPower issued a request for proposals in May 2005 for low impact generation projects in the 25 kW to 25 MW size range. A total of 17 bids totalling just over 241 MW were submitted, including 13 wind power projects with a combined capacity of 224 MW. The Gaia-Algonquin project was the only wind project to succeed, however. The other three winning proposals were for 5.1 MW heat recovery units to be installed at compressor stations along a natural gas pipeline running through the southern part of the province. The utility will now enter into detailed contract negotiations with the project proponents.
