AGL acquires rights to third wind farm in Hallet trio
Australia's largest energy retailer, AGL Energy, has acquired the development rights to the 90 MW Mount Bryan wind farm, 200 kilometres north of Adelaide in South Australia. It is the third project acquired from Wind Prospect's Hallett portfolio. The others are Brown Hill (95 MW) and Hallett Hill (71 MW), both of which are being built by Suzlon Energy Australia on AGL's behalf. Mount Bryan, otherwise known as Hallett 3, is slated to comprise 30 turbines. Wind Prospect will continue to act as planning consultant for the project. Including AGL's 90 MW Wattle Point wind farm, acquired from Meridian Energy in 2005, the company notes that by 2010 it could be operating more than 345 MW in South Australia. "Considering current and proposed projects, AGL now has a very strong foothold on many of the premier wind sites in mainland Australia," says the company's Michael Fraser. AGL expects to make a final investment decision on the project later this year. It will retain the flexibility to either fund the development or pursue a structured sale, it adds.
