Nova Scotia Power has issued requests for proposals for 20 MW of renewable energy and 10 MW of biomass projects to be connected to electricity distribution lines. The purpose of stipulating that projects must connect at the lower level of the grid network is to utilise unused capacity on the wires, with smaller projects potentially owned by local communities. "In particular, the goal is to enable community wind projects and provide more opportunity for companies in the forestry sector," says utility chief executive Rob Bennett. The deadline for proposals is July 7, with contracts to be awarded by the end of September. The utility wants the winning projects to be in service by mid-2012.
