Sydkraft, once the owner of the Maglarp jumbo turbine which it felled some years ago despite a chorus of protest from the Swedish wind community, is now keen to own as much wind plant as it can get its hands on to meet public demand for green power. The utility has taken over a 7.2 MW project of 12 Vestas V42-600 kW turbines on the artificial island of Gipsön outside Landskrona in the sound between Denmark and Sweden. The project was initiated by an independent company, Svensk Vindenergi HB, but it failed to raise financing for the scheme and now has only a minor stake in it. The turbines will be installed by Sydvensk Vindenergi AB, a Sydkraft subsidiary, on the island which was created from waste dumped over several decades by a huge cement factory in Landskrona. The project was the last to be funded under Sweden's most recent round of wind subsidies and it is unclear whether all 12 turbines will receive support. Construction was due to start on June 10. Once built, the wind farm will make Sydkraft one of the biggest wind power producers in Sweden.
