The Kapsut project is the largest wind farm licensed in Turkey to date. Italgen's local subsidiary hopes to receive a final construction permit in the next six months. If all goes to plan, civil works will start mid-2009, with completion in 2010 or 2011.
Italgen enters Turkey and looks to Africa
Italgen, the energy arm of Italian cement producer Italcementi, last month bought a 142.5 MW wind power project at Kapsut, in the Balikesir region of northwest Turkey. The purchase, from Bilgin Enerji, one of Turkey's leading owner-operators of wind generation plant, is part of Italcementi's sustainable development strategy to generate two-thirds of its production from renewables by 2012, compared to 44% today, all from hydroelectric plant in Italy. Its primary focus is now on wind power, both at home in Italy and in its target markets of Turkey as well as Morocco and Egypt, where it has agreements to develop up to 50 MW and 400 MW, respectively (“uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç, January 2008).
