Burned out generator replaced

NEG Micon has started work replacing the nacelle on one of its offshore turbines at Yttre Stengrund in Sweden which burnt out in March. The fire, one of the first recorded at an offshore wind installation, was caused by loose connections between the transformer's connection bars and the power cables from the generator circuit breaker.

NEG Micon says an identical replacement nacelle is being fitted and the turbine will be complete and ready for operation by mid-May, weather permitting. The 10 MW Yttre Stengrund project, sited at Kalmar Sound on Sweden's east coast, was completed in summer 2001 and the turbines are owned by Danish utility Energi E2.
