Portugal passes 2GW with 40 per cent market growth
With Portugal's wind market running at an annual growth rate of 40%, total wind capacity is expected to have passed 2000 MW in the first half of this year, according to Porto University's Instituto de Engenharia Mecánica e Gestão Industrial (INEGI). In all, construction licences had been issued for 3273 MW so far. Wind power currently supplies 7.7% of Portugal's electricity, with the government aiming for 45% from renewables by 2015, 20% from wind. From renewables association APREN, Antonio Sa da Costa says he is confident the 2015 goal will be met, predicting some 5600 MW of wind capacity online by then.
