Plans to develop 200 MW of onshore wind in the UK have been unveiled by Irish state-owned power company the Electricity Supply Board (ESB). The capacity, which will be developed in Northern Ireland as well as mainland Britain, is in addition to the company's ambitions to build a 3000 MW portfolio of conventional stations in the UK. In a first step, ESB has acquired the wind operating and development assets of Ireland-based developer DP Energy. According to Andy Paine from ESB International, the deal includes some 150 MW of projects under development in Northern Ireland and the Republic, as well as a minimum of 13 MW of operational wind farms in Ireland. In addition, ESB could acquire further capacity, subject to some pre-emption arrangements with other joint venture parties on some sites, he says.
