With the blessing of the Spanish environment ministry, wind turbine supplier Gamesa Eólica is proceeding with plans to build a 164 MW wind farm in the La Ventosa region of Oaxaca state in Mexico. The new facility will be in addition to Gamesa's 200 MW wind plant already under construction in the region. Both are being developed under the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism, under which the carbon credits generated by the plants will be sold back to the Spanish government- -- hence the need for the environment ministry's approval. Each credit is equivalent to one tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions saved. The 200 MW plant, the largest wind operation in Mexico, is expected to save 300,000 tonnes of CO2 a year alone. Gamesa Eólica says it also hopes to establish similar wind developments in other Latin American countries including Brazil, Dominican Republic and Uruguay.
