Amazon teams up with GE Vernova for renewables-powered data centres

GE Vernova has signed a strategic framework agreement to work with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to scale its data centres.

The US manufacturer is due to offer a number of solutions to electrify and decarbonise the web giant’s data centres across North America, Europe and Asia.

It will help to commercialise onshore wind projects, provide substation solutions to connect data centres to the grid, and offer other services, including advanced research, and consulting and financing help.

Meanwhile, AWS will provide GE Vernova with cloud services solutions to advance its cloud migration and digital innovation efforts, including through generative AI. It will also help the manufacturer to enhance its systems and processes, and accelerate development cycles.

Wind power companies and industry observers alike see surging power demand from data centres in the coming years, though forecasts of the scale of the growth vary.

However, some analysts have expressed doubts over whether a combination of renewables and storage alone will be sufficient, with some also seeing an opportunity for other sources such as gas and nuclear.
