Vestas to boost Ukrainian wind farm with new turbine order

Vestas is due to supply 384MW of its turbines to an onshore wind farm currently being developed in Ukraine despite the ongoing war in the country.

The Danish turbine manufacturer announced it had received a 384MW order for the second phase of Ukrainian utility DTEK’s Tyligulska project in southern Ukraine.

Under the terms of the deal Vestas will supply, deliver and commission 64 of its V162-6.2MW turbines – operating in 6MW mode – to the wind farm on the Black Sea coast.

In its entirety, the Tyligulska complex will comprise 83 of Vestas' V162-6.2MW turbines. The 114MW first phase came online in September 2023.

“Our goal is not only to restore what was destroyed by Russia, but also to lay the foundation for economic growth. The agreement on the construction of the second stage of the Tyligulska wind farm — the largest green energy facility in the country — during the war is also the creation of a strong and independent Ukrainian energy industry,” DTEK shareholder Rinat Akhmetov said.

DTEK continues to operate and build wind farms in Ukraine despite the ongoing war with Russia. The company says 271 of its employees have so far been killed in the war, with an additional, 847 wounded, 66 missing, 11 in captivity and 4,239 currently serving in Ukraine’s military.

Nevertheless, the company aims to integrate 6.1GW of onshore wind and 12.2GW of solar capacity in the war-torn country by 2030.
