Nova East Wind has agreed to work with the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs as it develops a floating 300-400MW offshore wind project off eastern Canada. Nova East is a joint venture of Ireland-based DP Energy and Dutch oil and gas services company SBM Offshore.
The C$2 billion ($1.45 billion) project would be located 20-30km off Goldboro, Nova Scotia and operational soon after 2030.
The agreement encourages indigenous participation in the Nova East Wind project, said the parties.
"Any time work is being considered on the lands and waters of Mi’kma’ki, it is important that Mi’kmaw voices are part of those conversations to ensure any developments are carried out in a responsible and sustainable manner,” said Chief Sidney Peters, Assembly of First Nations Nova Scotia.
"This is an important first step for Nova East Wind as it seeks to establish meaningful Indigenous participation in the project, a key component of this [memorandum of understanding],” added Simon De Pietro, chief executive of Ireland-based DP Energy.
