Offshore wind developer Corio Generation has signed a memorandum of understanding with Brazilian marine construction company Estaleiros do Brasil (EBR). It will explore the viability of EBR’s existing infrastructure to support offshore wind development in the Atlantic Ocean off Brazil’s south-east coast.
Corio plans to build up to 6GW of offshore wind capacity in Brazil, including 4.8GW across four projects off the country’s south-east coast.
Under the MoU Corio aims to assess EBR’s infrastructure in the port of Rio Grande in Brazil’s far south, close to the Uruguay border.
The EBR shipyard in the port covers a roughly 1,700,000m2 area, with facilities that help build floating platforms for the oil and gas industry and could possibly be used for offshore wind construction, Corio suggested.
Corio said the port could play an important role in two of its planned wind farms in the region — the 1.2GW Cassino offshore wind project and the 1.2GW Rio Grande offshore wind project.
