Plans unveiled for Chile’s first offshore wind farm

UK-based renewables developer 17 Energy and Chilean counterpart SC Power have formed a special purpose vehicle targeting a 500-1,000MW offshore wind farm off the coast of Chile.

The Viento Azul Biobío consortium aims to commission its project off the central Biobío region in the 2030s.

It would be the South American country’s first offshore wind farm, according to “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Intelligence, the research and data division of “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç.

The consortium partners flagged the region’s proximity to demand centres, port infrastructure, existing grid infrastructure and industrial capacities as being benefits to offshore wind development.

The development partners added that water depths off Biobío may necessitate the use of floating platforms.

They vowed to work closely with local communities, industry and government.

Chile had explored the potential for offshore wind in 2014, but ten years later it is yet to see any steel in the water or a regulatory framework in place
