All 41 Vestas turbines are producing power at AES Corp’s Delta Wind project in Tunica County, Mississippi, the US state’s first utility-scale wind installation.
Construction of the project began in 2023. It was originally developed by Steelhead Americas – Vestas' North American project development arm – before it was acquired by AES. Online retailer Amazon will buy the 184MW project’s output.
US states in the Deep South have few wind projects. “Change is often difficult, but we’re making history here with the Delta Wind project, and we believe this project can be a catalyst for accelerated renewable energy and economic development throughout the South,” said Billy Willis, administrator for Tunica County.
The Delta Wind project is located on 14,000 acres of privately owned farmland in Tunica County. It was designed in collaboration with landowners to be a “dual-use” project, which enables farming of rice, soybeans, corn and wheat to continue beneath the turbines.
