Vestas has confirmed a conditional agreement to supply Vattenfall and BASF with 112 of its V236-15.0W turbines for the pair’s 980MW Nordlicht 1 and 630MW Nordlicht 2 wind farms in the German North Sea.
It had first reported the conditional order last week (13 June), though had not confirmed details of the projects or the turbines to be used.
The Danish manufacturer has also signed a five-year service agreement, followed by an operational support agreement lasting until year 30 for the Nordlicht wind farms.
It is due to use “low-emission steel” for the top sections of 56 towers at the projects – meaning the carbon footprint will be reduced for half of the wind farms’ turbines.
This would account for 24% of the mass of the steel plates used for the wind farm area, leading to a 16% reduction in the towers’ overall carbon footprint, Vestas claimed.
The manufacturer explained that the tower sections will be fabricated using 100% steel scrap melted in an electric arc furnace fully powered by wind turbines.
Construction is set to start in 2026 ahead of full commissioning of the two projects in 2028.
