Ørsted and Tesla to add battery storage to 2.8GW Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm

Ørsted is partnering with electric vehicle and battery manufacturing major Tesla to build a battery storage system for its 2.8GW Hornsea 3 offshore wind project.

The Danish renewables major  has taken the final investment deicision on a Tesla-made battery that would be installed in Norfolk on the UK’s east coast – close to the North Sea area where Hornsea 3 is being developed.

It will co-locate the battery storage facilitiy with the wind farm's onshore converter station to minimise disruption and impact on the local area.

Ørsted is currently working with Dutch shipping firm Jan de Nul to install cables between the wind farm's North Sea site – around 120km from shore – and the onshore substation ahead of turbine installation.

The Danish developer claimed the battery storage system would be one of the largest in Europe once it is completed. It has a scheduled online date of 2026. Hornsea 3 is due to be commissioned one year later in 2027.
