Chinese state power giant to build Brazilian wind farm

China’s State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) is to build a new 105.4MW wind farm in northern Brazil, becoming the latest Chinese company to enter South America’s biggest wind power market.

Subsidiary SPIC Brasil confirmed it would invest BRL 780 million ($145 million) in construction of the 105.4MW wind farm in Touros in Rio Grande do Norte.

Construction is set to begin in the coming weeks meaning that the project – which is due to consist of 17 turbines with power ratings of 6.2MW – could be operational by the end of 2026. A supplier for the turbines has not yet been selected.

SPIC follows turbine maker Goldwind and China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) in entering the Brazilian market. Last year CGN inaugurated the 180MW Tanque Novo wind farm in Bahia, its third in the country. Goldwind supplied the turbines to two of them.
