Skyborn Renewables eyes 3GW offshore wind in northern Sweden

Skyborn Renewables plans to build a 3GW offshore wind farm just south of the Arctic Circle to help Swedish industries transition to renewable energy.

It has applied for a permit from the Swedish government and the land and environment court to build the 3GW Polargrund offshore wind farm 35km off the coast of Norrbotten county in northern Sweden.

Skyborn claims it will be capable of producing power equal to 7% of Sweden's current electricity consumption – though increasing electrification is set to at least double demand in the coming decades.

It argues that the wind farm will be vital for meeting the surging power demand from steel, mining, sustainable fuels and sustainable fertiliser industries in Norrbotten.

The developer added that project commissioning could take in the first half of the 2030s at the earliest.
