Green light for Mingyang and BASF’s 500MW Chinese offshore wind farm

German chemicals giant BASF and Chinese turbine maker Mingyang Smart Energy have received local approval for a planned 500MW wind farm off the coast of south-east China.

The pair plan to start construction of the 500MW Xuwen Dongsan offshore wind farm this year ahead of commissioning by the end of 2025. They had announced plans for the project last year.

Most of the project’s output will go directly to BASF’s chemical production plant in Guangdong province, which is due to be fully powered by renewables.

BASF already owns a stake in a Dutch offshore wind farm and has offtake agreements in place in Germany.
