Colombia readies rules for first offshore wind tender

The Colombian government is preparing to launch the rules for the country’s first tender for offshore wind projects in the coming weeks, the Ministry of Energy and Mines has confirmed.

The ministry is working with the National Hydrocarbons Agency and the General Maritime Office to revise the regulations and documents for the tender process based on comments and observations made by interested parties.

This could involve changes to the technical and financial requisites for participants, the conditions for obtaining maritime concessions, the procedure for nominating maritime areas, and the guarantees required for the temporary occupation permit.

"Clarifications, adjustments, changes and the final version of the tendering schedule are expected to be announced in the coming weeks,” the ministry said.

A study by the ministry and the World Bank identified a potential for 50GW of wind capacity along Colombia’s coastline.

The government plans to make available areas along its central Caribbean coast in the first auction of its kind in South America.
