The site is in the Port of Brake, Lower Saxony, operated by Niedersachsen Ports (NPorts), the largest public seaport operator in Germany.
With an installed electrolysis capacity of 10MW, the plant will produce up to 1,150 tonnes of green hydrogen per year and help decarbonise the industrial port complex and maritime transport.
The plant will be the first in the northern German region to make green hydrogen available to the wider market, according to Lhyfe.
Holger Banik, managing director of NPorts and JadeWeserPort Realisierungs said hydrogen would enable the port industry to increasingly dispense with fossil fuels, serving a broad network over short distances.
“We see this as an important contribution to the energy transition and circular economy in the region,” he added.
Michael Kurz, mayor of Brake, said the availability of hydrogen locally would create new opportunities for companies. “The port of Brake will become a hub for green innovation and sustainable growth,” he said.
Luc Graré, head of central and eastern Europe at Lhyfe, said the project demonstrates the economic viability of hydrogen solutions in the transport and industrial sectors.
Lhyfe recently announced the start of construction of a 10MW hydrogen production plant in the south-western German state of Baden-Württemberg.
The company’s first site has been in operation since the second half of 2021. Other sites are under construction.
