Lhyfe and Source Galileo plan ‘economies of scale’ in UK hydrogen production

An agreement between Lhyfe and Source Galileo to develop commercial-scale green and renewable hydrogen production units in the UK and Ireland hopes to create economies of scale.

Source Galileo is adding hydrogen projects to its portfolio of offshore wind and onshore battery and solar, and has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Lhyfe.

The partnership will aim to supply hydrogen to a variety of customers across the industry and transport sectors.

The two companies said they already have plans for multiple commercial-scale green hydrogen production sites in the UK. They are also exploring opportunities in Ireland, focussed on identifying consumers and assessing factors such as grid availability, power supply, land accessibility, and planning requirements.

Initially, the companies will focus on using electricity from onshore renewable sources.

Long-term goals

However, in the longer term, they said they could harness the enormous offshore wind potential in the UK and Ireland. Source Galileo has a pipeline of 10GW of offshore wind and hydrogen projects under development in the UK, Ireland and Norway.

Kevin Lynch, chief executive of Source Galileo, said: “Our partnership with Lhyfe provides an onshore and offshore platform and a major step forward from which to assist in delivering government hydrogen targets.”

Targets

The UK government has doubled its low-carbon hydrogen production target from 5GW to 10GW by 2030, with at least half of this to come from green hydrogen.

Ireland published its hydrogen strategy in July 2023, which outlined plans to develop 2GW of hydrogen production from offshore wind farms in the country by 2030.

Taia Kronborg, chief business officer at Lhyfe, said: “We are pleased to announce this agreement…which represents an exciting opportunity to drive forward the clean energy transition with large-scale green hydrogen production.”
