South Africa’s grid operator Eskom is making almost 3.5GW of transmission capacity available for wind projects in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, the company has announced.
Previous bid rounds and private offtakers have taken up all the existing availability on the transmission grid, with more than 4GW of projects rejected in 2022 as a result.
But new availability will be achieved “by accepting a reasonable share of no more than 10% of curtailment” for previously approved projects, Eskom’s transmission group executive, Segomoco Scheppers, said.
Publishing an addendum to its generation connection capacity assessment (GCCA) 2025, Eskom will enable 2,680MW in the Western Cape and 790MW in the Eastern Cape to connect to the grid “almost immediately”.
