EDP Renewables plans to a build a 323MW hybrid generation facility in northern Chile after winning a tender to use government land set aside for renewables development.
Chile’s state assets ministry awarded the company a 40-year concession for a 28.5km2-parcel of land in the Taltal wind reserve in the northern region of Antofagasta.
As well as solar panels and wind turbines, EDPR said that the project would also include battery energy storage.
“The land awarded to EDPR for development offer excellent wind and solar resource making the Taltal district an ideal location to develop competitive clean energy projects,” said country manager Enrique Alvarez-Uria.
The tender is the latest held in Chile to push renewables development. Colbun, the winner of the first, is currently building the 812MW Horizonte wind farm on the reserve, which will be the country’s largest when completed.
