Envision Energy has secured a deal to supply 1GW of wind turbines to two of ACWA Power's wind farms in Uzbekistan.
The Chinese manufacturer is due to supply its EN171-6.5 turbines to the 500MW Bash and 500MW Dzhankeldy wind farms, which are currently under construction in Uzbekistan.
Both projects are being built by Saudi developer ACWA, which has greatly expanded its portfolio with a pipeline of new wind projects in central Asia recently, including a 1GW project in Kazakhstan and 2.5GW of capacity in Azerbaijan.
Uzbekistan is currently targeting 4GW of installed wind capacity by 2026 and 5GW by 2030 as it seeks to up the percentage share of renewables in an energy mix otherwise dominated by natural gas. Turbines were recently installed at its first large-scale wind farm, the 500MW Zarafshan project in the north of the country.
Funding for the Bash and Dzhankeldy wind farms is being supplied by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the German Investment Corporation (DEG), Proparco, the OPEC Fund, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) among other sources.
